While we were away I was rather excited to find out that we would be at my mum's in time for the Dundonald Highland Games. The village I grew up in for some reason hosted one of the bigger games of the area. A parade, pipe band competitions, highland dancing, bouncy castles, ice cream, candy floss, so many stalls and yes even caber tossing! All with the backdrop of the third oldest castle in Scotland.
So many people have bragged to me about how great the island summer fetes are, but really, they have nothing on a proper Highland games, sorry! I even once had the chance to work at the Edinburgh Games, highlight of that, the sheep shearing contest. Love it.
Anyway my dad and I took the girls along for the afternoon, well I say afternoon but really we made it twice round the field before Jessica was so overawed by everything that she fell asleep...but she watched the pipe bands, asked why men were it skirts (how is she so English!?), had a ice cream of course and a bounce on the boingy castle. I even cracked a huge fear and touched a snake, anyone who knows me can testify what a huge feat that was. Unfortunately Amelia is my only witness to this event and oh my gosh was my hand shaking.
Since becoming a mummy it is ridiculous how much joy I can get from just stepping back and watching my kids face light up at the simplest things x
